Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), poses a significant risk to trekkers, particularly when ascending rapidly without adequate acclimatization. Skipping recommended acclimatization days or ascending too quickly heightens susceptibility to AMS. Importantly, it does not discriminate based on age, gender, or fitness level; even physically fit individuals are not immune. Those who have previously experienced it may be more prone to it on subsequent trips. While the overall death rate it causes is relatively low, severe cases can result in fatalities. The risk intensifies notably at altitudes surpassing 2,500 meters (8,200 feet). Recognizing the importance of gradual acclimatization, adhering to recommended ascent rates, being vigilant about symptoms, and listening to your experienced guide are crucial measures to deal with it. Our team has guides with each for more than 5+years and has years of experience dealing with clients who had altitude sickness, so we got your back!

Difficulty

The trek covers approximately 79 kilometers (49 miles) round trip, with daily walking distances ranging from 4 to 11 kilometers. As you ascend to altitudes above 5,000 meters (16,404 feet), the oxygen levels decrease significantly, typically ranging between 75% and 85% at Everest Base Camp (5,364 meters or 17,598 feet). The weather in the Everest region can be unpredictable, with cold temperatures and the possibility of snow adding to the overall challenge. It's crucial to be prepared for changing weather conditions. Altitude sickness is a real concern at higher elevations, though the overall death rate is low. Still, trekkers should be aware of the risks and prioritize safety by acclimatizing properly and paying attention to symptoms. This trek can be called a moderate trek.

Essential trekking gear includes sturdy hiking boots, a comfortable backpack, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are recommended), a sleeping bag, and trekking poles. It's essential to be well-prepared for varying weather conditions. These items can be obtained from outdoor gear stores or rented in Thamel, Kathmandu.  We can guide the necessary equipment.

How should I train for the altitude and changing weather conditions during the trek?

Training for altitude involves gradual exposure to higher elevations and practicing controlled breathing. Endurance training, including cardio exercises and strength training, will enhance your overall readiness for the trek.

  • EBC Luxury Trek, what an honor

My EBC Luxurious Trek with Base Camp on Everest Traveling was a voyage through history, not just a beautiful stroll. The stories of Sherpa's bravery and seeing Edmund Hillary's monument brought the Everest legends to life. Having hiked the same routes as early mountaineers, I developed a respect and admiration for their fearlessness and perseverance. This journey was about more than simply getting to the end point; it was also about paying tribute to the past and carrying on the Everest tradition.
